Note: Ancient port at the head of the Persian Gulf; capital of the ancient kingdom of Characene. Was established by Alexander the Great in 324, on the site of a Persian settlement, Durine. Located on an artificial elevation at confluence of Tigris and Karun rivers; was a town of the Achaemenid Empire in Mesopotamia; was the main mercantile center on the Tigris estuary for centuries; main mercantile center on Tigris estuary for centuries; was caravan destination on route from Palmyra. The original Greek town was enlarged by the Arabian chieftain, Spasines, and renamed Spasines and Charax Spasinou after him. |
