Note: Sārī was founded during the Sasanid period (224-651 CE) and from the 7th-9th centuries it became the capital of Tabarestan. Like many Persian cities in 12th century, it was destroyed by the Mongols. During the rule of Agha Mohammad Khan (reg 1779-97) of the Qajars, the city became the designated capital of Irān. Currently, Sārī is a diversely populated city which includes Persians, Turks, Kurds, Bangashis, Afghans, and Turkomans. |
