Note: Both a province and historic region, Māzandarān is primarily spread North of the Alborz Mountains with its border against the Caspian Sea. The climate is generally described as sub-tropical and the coastal plain is dominated by marshlands. In the first millennium BCE, an early Iranian society was thriving in the region until ca. 720 CE, when the region converted to Islam after the Arab general Yezid ibn Mohallab took control. In the 13th and 14th centuries the Mongols attacked the Eastern and Western borders of Māzandarān and later the Russian Cossacks led a fatal attempt to secure the region for themselves. In 1723 the Russian Empire took over Māzandarān, but were not able to establish authority. Eventually, the Qajar rulers were able to gain authority over the territory, restoring it to Îrān. The province's proximity to the Caspian Sea enables it to yield barley, wheat, rice, tobacco, cotton, oilseeds, tea, jute, fruits and vegetables. The region also contains deposits of coal & building stone and is known to be the birthplace of last shah of Iran, Pahlavi (deposed 1979).
