Note: The traditional site of the burial of the martyred Santa Rufina and the cetre of cult to her, 9 km N-W of Rome on the ancient Via Cornelia; about the year 500 it became the seat of the bishopric of Silva Candida, comprising the whole area between Rome and the sea; it was restored by Pope Hadrian I in the late eight century , becoming for a time the centre of a considerable settlement. The site was excavated by the Istituto Pontificio di Archeologia Cristiana and the British School at Rome in 1965-1967 and 1969.
