Note: Ancient town on the rugged southern coast of Turkey; site is now largely submerged. It thrived for 1,300 years as an important manufacturing and export center for Tyrean purple dye. Was also a flourishing station on the pilgrimage route to the Holy Land, and site of several pilgrimage churches.
