Note: The town in Hainaut province of southwestern Belgium was an important center for the mining of coal and metals since ancient times. Although mining is no longer done there, the town is noted for its reconstruction of an ancient mine and the industrial complex surrounding it. The archaeological site, called the "miners' township," was developed by Bruno Renard and Henri de George from 1820 to 1832. A museum of modern art has been opened in an old colliery on the site.
