Note: The city of Ingolstadt in Upper Bavaria in southern Germany is situated on the Danube and Schutter Rivers. It was a crown estate in the 9th century and was chartered in 1250. Due to the presence of a major university founded there in 1472, Ingolstadt became an important center in the German Humanist movement and the Counter-Reformation. The university was moved to Landshut, then to Munich in the early 19th century. It served as a garrison town and fortress in the 19th century. Damaged in World War II, expanded greatly after being rebuilt. However, much of its historic architecture remains in the central old town that contains many medieval churches and other buildings and noteworthy structures like the remnants of the 14-century city walls, the great brick Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady, built 1425-1500, and the Late Baroque church of Maria de Victoria, built 1732-1736. A circle of parkland separates the old town from the residential and industrial parts of the modern city. It is a center for heavy industry, including oil refining. The 2004 estimated population was 119,300. |
