Note: The city of Kaiserslautern is situated in the midst of Pfälzer Wald nature preserve some 43 miles northwest of Karlsruhe. It was a royal residence built by Charlemagne in the ninth century. First mentioned in 882, it received its city charter in 1276. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa enlarged the palace in the 1150s. It was ruled by the counts Palatine from 1375, by France from 1793 to 1814, then became part of Bavaria in 1816. It was the center of the Palatinate democratic revolution in 1848-1849.The city suffered extensive damage in the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century and again in World War II. Despite the damage, several of its historic structures have survived. In the later 20th century it became an important cultural and industrial center, with many museums and schools, a theater, and a concert hall. It is a banking and railroad center, and known for its production of automobiles and textiles. Its 2005 population was calculated at 98,947. |
