Note: The city of Schwedt an der Oder is situated on the Westoder River, southwest of Szczecin (Stettin), Poland. First mentioned in 1265, it passed from Pomerania to Brandenburg in the 15th century. French Huguenots settled here in the 17th century, and introduced tobacco growing. It was extensively damaged in World War II, the only historic building surviving being the Hohenzollern palace built 1719-23. Since war's end, the city has grown significantly and has become a busy industrial center, with oil refining, papermaking, and fertilizer production being the principal industries. The 2004 estimated population was 37,700. |
