Note: The eastern German city of Riesa is situated on the Elbe river about 39 miles east of Leipzig. The town developed around a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, and in 1170 a convent was founded there also. The town was chartered in 1623 but soon lost its status, and was rechartered only in 1859, when the town again flourished due to industrial development and railway connections. Its major piece of historic architecture is its town hall, built as a castle in the 16th century. The modern city is a transportation hub, being at the junction of the Leipzig-Dresden and Berlin-Chemnitz rail lines. It is also a busy river port, the most important in northern Saxony. The city is an industrial center with an oil refinery, rolling mills, steelworks, a cotton mill, and factories for the production of foodstuffs, wood products, and tires. The calculated population for 2005 was 36,788. |
