Note: The city of Gütersloh lies in a farming region in the district of Detmold in the west-central German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It grew around local textile mills and slaughterhouses around the turn of the 19th century. In its early years it belonged to the bishopric of Osnabrück, but passed to Prussia in 1815. It received its charter in 1825. A city known for its gardens and green spaces, it is noted particularly for its botanical gardens. In 2004, its population was estimated at about 93,600.
