Note: The city of Amberg is located on the Vils River, at the edge of the Bavarian Forest in Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany. It was noted as a court town by the 11th century, and was a major trading center and fortified city from the 14th to the 16th century. It was the scene of the defeat of the French by Archduke Charles of Austria in the 1796 in War of the First Coalition. Among its historic structures still surviving re the medieval walls and town gates, along with many fine churches. Modern industries include glass grinding, enameling, porcelain and brick works, breweries, and iron works. The 2004 estimated population was 44,700. |
