Note: The town is located in the province of Hainaut in southwest-central Belgium, 16 miles southwest of Brussels. Founded in the eleventh century, it was an important medieval commercial center, famed for its tapestry. It was part of France until 1606, when King Henri IV of France sold the castle and park to the house of Arenberg. Antoine d'Arenberg created the splendid park for which the town is famous. Also notable is a chapel built in the dungeon that is all that remains of the castle. The 2003 estimated population was 11,200. |
