Note: Town on the site of settlements of Venetic origin, dating 12th-9th centuries BCE, consisting from stilt houses in the wetlands which were then closer to the sea; later was an Etruscan port. Later became a Roman town & flourishing port on the Adriatic Sea (to which it gave its name), until the silting up of the Po & Adige deltas caused the sea to recede (now 22 km to the East). |
