Note: Saint Niklaas lies southwest of Antwerpen in the Belgian province of Oost-Vlaanderen. The former capital of the Waasland region, it was granted independence by the Count of Flanders in 1241, and chartered in 1513. Its best-known architecture includes the town hall of1876 with a 35-bell carillon, the old town hall built in1663, now serving as law courts, the Church of Sint-Niklaas built in the 15th and 16th centuries and restored in 1900, Notre Dame Church built in1844, and the Walburg Château of the 16th century. In the 20th century it became a rail junction and main industrial and trade center for the surrounding Waasland farming area. It has the largest marketplace in Belgium, covering seven and one-half acres. Its 2003 estimated population was 68,700. |
