Note: The original settlement was built in a natural clearing in the primitive forest of what is now the area along the Charleroi-Brussels Canal, just southwest of Brussels, Belgium. It was the site of a Roman villa, then a Frankish settlement. It is noted for the crypt of St. Guidon, the patron saint of farm animals. It is considered to have been the original settlement in the Brussels area, and is now a residential and manufacturing suburb of that city. Historically it has been a center for weaving calicoes, spinning, and dyeing.
