Note: The city of Goslar is located in north-central Germany at the foot of the northern Harz Mountains. Founded at guard the local silver mines in 922, it became the favorite residence of the early Holy Roman Emperors. It joined Hanseatic League in the 13th century, and became an imperial free city from the 13 to the 19th century. Between 1802 and 1866 it changed hands several times among Prussia, Hanover, and Westphalia. It was important as an agricultural center under the Nazi regime. It remained relatively unscathed during World War II and served as a haven for refugees from other towns. Much of its historic architecture remains, including the remnant of the old city walls, several medieval towers and gates, and the guildhalls of the bakers' and cloth merchants' guilds, The Imperial Palace was built in 1040 and restored in the 19th century, and the town hall of the 12th century was rebuilt at a later date. The city is a major tourist destination. It also has factories for chemicals and men's clothing. Its 2004 estimated population was 43,900. |
