Note: The northwestern German city of Wuppertal is situated on the steep banks of the Wupper river in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the vicinity of Düsselsorf. Medieval communities existed here, but the modern city resulted from the combination in 1929 of six towns under the name of Barmen-Elberfeld. The name was changed the next year to Wuppertal. Barmen and Elberfeld were documented in the 11th and 12th centuries, and received together the monopoly for yarn bleaching for the district in 1527. The towns continued to expand their role in the general textile industry, adding the crafts of ribbon making and linen weaving in the 16th century, lace making around 1750, silk weaving around 1775, and red dyeing in 1785. In 1853 a system of poor relief was inaugurated in Elberfeld and became a model for such civic services around the world. A monorail suspension railway was built to link all six towns of the area. In the early 20th century, facilitating the amalgamation of the towns. Wuppertal was severely damaged in World War II, and was rebuilt in the form of parallel terraces on the slopes of the Wupper river valley, incorporating many parks, gardens, and green spaces and a renowned zoo. Today the city is a textile center and also manufactures chemicals, rubber, machinery, vehicles, beer, and tools. There are also printing presses and publishing houses. The estimated population for 2004 was 362,800.
