Note: The town of Eichstätt in Upper Bavaria in southern Germany is situated on the Altmühl River. It was a Roman site, then expanded after St. Boniface founded a bishopric there in 741. Prince-bishops of the Holy Roman Empire ruled it until 1802. It was given to Eugène de Beauharnais by the king of Bavaria in 1817, but returned to Bavaria in 1855. Today the town is a center for trade but has very little industry. The contains a great deal of historic architecture, including the church of the Benedictine Abbey, founded in 870, which houses the tomb of St. Wallburga, the cathedral of St. Willibald consecrated in 1060 but built on over the years in various styles, the 15th-century town hall, and the Baroque episcopal, later ducal palace. The 2004 estimated population was 13,000. |
