Note: The city of Tübingen is situated on the Neckar River at its junction with the Ammer and Steinach Rivers, in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. The settlement grew around the castle of the counts palatine of Tübingen in the 11th century, and was first documented as a town in 1231. The town went to Württemberg in 1342, but changed hands among the Swabian League, Swedes, French, and Holy Roman Empire in the 17th century. Long renowned as a seat of learning, it was home to astronomer J Kepler, poet J Hölderllin, and philosopher G Hegel. The most notable of its historic structures is the Hohentübingen ducal castle, built in the 16th and 17th centuries and now housing several institutes belonging to the University of Tübingen. Modern industries include metal and machinery, textile, and paper manufactures. It is also a publishing center. The 2004 estimated population was 83,300. |
