Note: Ancient site, adjacent to the present-day town of Geyre, dating to the Chalcolithic period. It flourished during the Roman period, and was protected by Caesar and Augustus. It declined with the turmoil of the 12th and 13th centuries and Tamerlane. The ruins of Greco-Roman Aphrodisias were partially unearthed by French and Italian projects; excavations were reopened by New York University 1961. |
