Note: The city of Eberswalde is located in the Thorn-Eberswalder glacial valley, at a natural ford in the Finow River. The site has been settled since the 11th century BCE. The margraves of Brandenburg built a castle on the site of a Slavic fortification in the 13th century CE. An early center of industry thanks to the availability of waterpower and bog-iron and the canalization of the Finow River, it was settled and further developed by Thuringian cutlers in the 18th century, who brought their craft to their new city. In the 19th century arose the production of marine and industrial cranes, Europe's largest factory for which still exists and operates in Eberswalde. The city also boats a medical school, a forest research institute, and a museum. The 2004 estimated population was 42,600. In 1970 Eberswalde was merged with the settlement of Finow to create Eberswalde-Finow. In 1993 the name Eberswalde was restored.
