Note: This was a former federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians, which existed as a reservation from 1901-1957. It spanned 101 acres of river bottoms, sloping hillsides, and flat terrance lands in the Ukiah Valley, presently known as Mendocino County, CA. The reservation was first established in 1909, when the Bureau of Indian Affairs purchased land in Coyote Valley for the benefit of local tribes as part of the Yokaya Land Grant. In 1949, as the Coyote Valley Dam Project began to emerge as a threat to the Rancheria, tribal members voted to sell their lands to the federal governemnt for dam construction in exchange for a new reservation with an equal amount of land. The reservation was officially terminated on July 10, 1957, when Congress enacted HR 6692 to allow the Rancheria lands to be acquired by the Army Corps of Engineers for dam construction, among other stipulations. The Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians would not receive a new federally-recognized reservation until 1979. |
