Experiencing the Getty Collection
East-West Connections: Exoticism, Orientalism, and the "Other"

Our series of gallery courses exploring the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum continues with this four-part look at exotic subjects and motifs in Western art from the 13th through 20th centuries, led by gallery teachers Bryan C. Keene and Jennifer Li.

The final session covers the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe and America, probing the concept of Orientalism with a look at paintings such as Moroccan Horseman Crossing a Ford by Eugène Delacroix and Arii Matamoe (The Royal End) by Paul Gauguin (shown here). You'll discover the influence of Japanese woodblock prints on the Impressionists and look at The Tent of Holofernes by Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi.

The historical backdrop for this session is the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a time of increased cultural and artistic exchange among Western Europe, the Byzantine Empire, and the Islamic world. You'll explore how artists in Christian Italy incorporated Islamic and "Oriental" motifs into textiles, ceramics, and manuscripts from the 14th through the 16th centuries and look closely at works of art including Vittore Carpaccio's Hunting on the Lagoon, a Hispano-Moresque Deep Dish from Spain (shown here), and the Prayer Book of Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg.

Part III: From the Silk Road to Versailles

Explore chinoiserie and japonisme, the vogue in Europe for ornamental objects from China and Japan. Discover the decorative arts galleries, which transport you to French palaces and country estates, to see works such as a Group of Japanese Figures, tapestries on The Story of the Emperor of China, and Still Life: Tea Set (shown here). Participants are invited to an informal tea after the course.

Part II: Discovery, Trade, and International Travel

Date: Saturday, August 16, 2008
Time: 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Sketching Gallery and Museum galleries

Embark on a global journey through art of the 15th through 18th centuries. This session analyzes European perceptions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas and explores mercantilism in Europe with a look at still life paintings such as Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Pomegranate (detail shown above). You'll explore Rembrandt's Daniel and Cyrus before the Idol Bel and discover works from the decorative arts collection such as the spectacular Long-Case Musical Clock (shown here). You'll also learn about the historical and artistic context for the spectacular illustrations in the exhibition Maria Sibylla Merian and Daughters: Women of Art and Science, which you are invited to explore after the session.
