[Indian Portrait Album, ca. 1800]

This album contains portraits of Indian sitters and subjects made by various photographers. The portraits are partially arranged according to ethnoreligious categories—Hindu, Muslim, Parsi—and by gender. Many of the sitters, including maharajas, officials, and members of prominent families, are identified by name.

Images of people engaged in different types of occupations are also interspersed in the album. Some portraits and religious images are photographic reproductions of paintings; there are also photographs of sculptures.
