Enhance Writing Skills with Visual Art

Art meets language arts in four new lessons written by elementary teachers from the Los Angeles area. In these lessons, students create works of art and write compositions inspired by paintings, a photo-collage, and decorative arts objects in the Getty Museum's collection.

These are the latest lessons developed by teachers who participated in the Getty Museum's Art & Language Arts professional development program:

The Changing Landscape

Current Exhibitions

Discover key moments in the French landscape tradition, from its emergence in the 1600s to its preeminence in the 1800s, in the exhibition Capturing Nature's Beauty: Three Centuries of French Landscapes. Adapt the lesson "The Changing Landscape" to examine landscape drawings on view in the exhibition. In the lesson, middle school students compare three landscapes that emphasize space, depth, and the concepts of foreground, middle ground, and background.

View the lesson "The Changing Landscape."
