The Catholic Rubens: Saints and Martyrs
Willibald Sauerländer
The art of Peter Paul Rubens is rooted in an era darkened by the long shadow of devastating wars between Protestants and Catholics. In contrast to recent secular interpretations, this fresh consideration of Rubens argues that the artist sought to elicit devout emotions with his religious images and to persuade his spectators to return to Catholicism through the beauty of his art.
