In this free one-day workshop, K-12 teachers will explore contemporary works of art inspired by the Getty Center site and objects in the Getty Museum's collection. Through presentations in the Getty's galleries and hands-on activities, you'll learn strategies for discussing and teaching with, contemporary works of art in your classroom.
The workshop will include a talk by contemporary artist Nicole Cohen, who will discuss the inspiration for and process of creating her video installation Please Be Seated. Attendees will receive curricular materials, including lesson plans and reproductions of artworks.

Artists often make drawings in which they record the world they see around them using a single medium, such as pencil, pastel, or ink. In Hendrik Meyer's drawing A Winter Scene, students can see how one artist used several different materials (often called 'mixed-media') to create an idealized scene.
Meyer's drawing is now on view in the exhibition Ten Years of Drawings: What, How, and Why. Explore this drawing and the exhibition with students in grades 3-12 and use the activity "Recording Nature's Nuances" to explore ways that artists depict natural scenes. Have students draw a scene from memory then create studies of elements from life to add to their idealized scene. Students can think about the time of year and activities depicted in Meyer's drawing as an inspiration to create an original mixed media drawing about their favorite time of year.
