Open Studio: A Collection of Art-Making Ideas by Artists

Education

Artist Mark Bradford conceived this project especially for K–12 teachers. He asked 11 international artists to create art-making activities that present the perspectives of practicing artists. Each activity is presented as a free, downloadable PDF that includes an art-making prompt, an artist biography, and images of the artist and works of art by the artist.

Visit the Open Studio site to see the activities, and watch a video of Bradford introducing the project.

Explore Connections between Imagery in the Old and New Testaments

Current Exhibitions

The Old Testament portion of the Bible was a rich source for narrative art in the Middle Ages. The exhibition The Old Testament in Medieval Manuscript Illumination explores how medieval readers and artists turned to the Old Testament for guidance and entertainment. An online interactive allows you to take a closer look at two books in which artists created parallel scenes from the New and Old Testaments.

Explore the interactive and learn more about the exhibition The Old Testament in Medieval Manuscript Illumination, on view at the Getty Center through August 8, 2010.

Connecting Science and Sculpture

Current Exhibitions

Get a rare look inside the process artists use to create bronze sculpture in the exhibition Foundry to Finish: The Making of a Bronze Sculpture, which describes the steps of the process from modeling to casting and finishing. Explore this exhibition online with students in grades K–12, and visit our video gallery to watch a contemporary artist demonstrate bronze-casting techniques.

Connect this exhibition to science with the lesson "Finding Balance." The lesson explores how an artist must consider the weight of materials and the force of gravity to literally balance a sculpture, and provides instruction for students to create their own sculptures.
