For almost 50 years, Bernd and Hilla Becher photographed aging industrial buildings and workers' housing in Western Europe. Their unique approach has influenced subsequent generations of artists. Hear Hilla Becher talk about the motivations, technique, and meaning of her work with her husband in an audio interview conducted by the Getty Museum.
Use the audio to introduce students to this contemporary artist's work, or to prepare your class for a visit to the Museum.
Listen to the audio interview with Hilla Becher.
A transcript of the interview is also available.

In the exhibition Bernd and Hilla Becher: Basic Forms, students in grades K–12 can explore how some artists document and classify their surroundings. Adapt the lesson "Clearly Classified" to motivate students to observe and identify the unique and common characteristics of buildings in their own neighborhoods, much as the Bechers did in their region of Germany.
