Geist, Sidney (American sculptor and author, 1914-2005)
|
Note: Sculptor, teacher and writer born 11 April 1914, died 18 October 2005. Geist was an authority on Constantin Brancusi. His own work was usually of hand-carved wood painted in vivid colors. His major scholarly work, "Brancusi: A Study of the Sculpture" was published in 1968, though he wrote other books on Brancusi including a catalogue raisonné. From 1938 to 1940 he worked as a sculptor on the New Jersey Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration. He was a private in the U.S. Army 1944-1945, and a student at the Art Students League, NY, 1945-1947. He held many teaching posts from the 1950s; at Vassar, University of California, Berkeley, and Pratt Institute. He published critical writing in various periodicals including Art Digest, Arts, Artforum, and The New Criterion. In 1964 he helped found the New York Studio School. |
