Painter of Vatican 73 (Corinthian vase painter, active 650-625 BCE)
|
Note: The Painter of Vatican 73 worked in Corinth decorating vases in the black-figure technique. From about 640 to 625 BCE, he was one of the most prolific vase painters in Corinth, specializing in the decoration of oinochoai and olpai. As with most vase painters, the real name of the Painter of Vatican 73 is unknown, and he is identified only by the stylistic traits of his work. He is named for a vase now in the Vatican Museums with the inventory number 73. Nearly all of his known work displays rows of animals, usually four on a vessel. His work is also characterized by symmetry and a careful arrangement of the animals in the rows. |
