Kleophrades (Greek potter, active ca. 490 BCE)
|
Note: Son of the Amasis painter. Kleophrades made pots for two of the most accomplished red figure painters of the early 5th century, one of whom was the Kleophrades Painter, named after the potter since none of his surviving works are signed. Kleophrades signed three of his cups "Kleophrades, the son of Amasis." His father Amasis, also a potter, was successful enough that his son thought it would help his own business to emphasize the connection. Amasis may have left his business to his son, including his kiln and equipment, and trained him as a potter. As in other times, there was probably a tradition in antiquity of skilled professions being passed down from father to son. One of Kleophrades' signed works is an early, exceptionally large red figure cup (now in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris). Several important vase painters are known to have worked in Kleophrades' shop, including Douris and the Kleophrades Painter. |
