Gaston III Phœbus, Count of Foix (French count, 1331-1391)

Note: Born either in Orthez or Foix, the son of Gaston II (1308-1343); he was 11th count of Foix, and viscount of Béarn. Gaston Phébus was an important political and military leader known for the magnificence and sophistication of his household. He himself owned sixteen hundred sporting dogs and two hundred horses. He was known as one of the greatest huntsmen of his day; he died of a stroke while washing his hands after returning from a bear hunt. His Livre de chasse (Book of the Hunt) was written between 1387 and 1388. It was dedicated to Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. |
