Machek, Antonín (Bohemian painter and printmaker, 1775-1844)

Note: Painter who studied in Prague and Vienna and became one of the most successful Bohemian portraitists of his time. His subjects came from the Czech national revival, and local Prague intelligentsia. Most of his works are held by the Prague National Gallery, including portraits of "Václav Hanka" (1826) and "Josef Jungmann" (1833). He developed a lithography workshop in Prague in 1828 and helped publish a collection of lithographs entitled "The History of Bohemia in Pictures" (1820-1834). He is also known to have created some stage designs.
