Akhenaton, King of Egypt (Ancient Egyptian king, died 1336 BCE)
|
Note: Son of Amenhotep III. Noted for establishing the cult of Aton, the sun disk, worshipped over all other dieties. He moved the capital from Thebes to Amarna, where a new city was built. Under his rule, a new ideal in the depiction of the human form was established, with large facial features, long narrow faces and limbs, and rounded hips and bellies. It was formerly believed that the new ideal represented the actual physical appearance of the king, but the mummies of his nearest relatives show normal facial and body proportions (his own mummy is still unidentified). He was married to his half-sister, Nefertiti, known as a great beauty through famous sculptures. |
