Gang Io (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1788-1857)

Note: Gang Io was a calligrapher, painter, and civil official from the late Joseon period. A grandson of Gang Sehwang (1713-1791), he developed friendships with literati painters like Kim Jeonghui (1786-1856) and Shin Myeongjun (1803-1842) as well as middle-class painters such as Jo Huiryong (1789-1866) and Yi Jaegwan (1783-1849). Gang employed the Southern School literati painting style and was proficient at landscape and plum blossom painting. He particularly enjoyed painting black and red ink plum blossoms, which was popular in the nineteenth century.
