Kappel, Marcus (German banker and collector, 1839-1919)
|
Note: Marcus Kappel began his collecting activities only after he retired from the grain trade and banking. Advised by Wilhelm von Bode, he built a high-quality collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings from the 17th Century, as well as German, Italian Renaissance, and art of the 19th Century. He favored works by Adolph Menzel. Kappel was a member of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum Society and founded the Berlin museums (Department of pictorial works of the Christian era , Art Gallery, National Gallery of Prints and Drawings , as well as the Islamic and East Asian collection ) a number of works of art .
