Record Type: Corporate Body
Cumberland Market Group (British group of painters, formed 1914)

Note: British group of painters formed by Robert Bevan, Charles Ginner, and Harold Gilman in 1914. John Nash joined the group the following year. Christopher Nevinson and E. McKnight Kauffer attended meetings and compared works but did not exhibit with the group. Members typically drew on everyday life for their subjects, particularly that of northwestern London, and consciously embraced the style called 'Neo-Realism.' Although the Cumberland Market Group developed out of the Camden Town Group, its members sought a more rigorous attention to natural facts. The group briefly had a school of painting in Soho, London from 1916 to 1917. Their only exhibition was held in April of 1915 at the Goupil Galleries in London. The group lapsed after Gilman's death in 1919, although it never officially disbanded. In 1921 Bevan and Ginner organized an exhibition of modern English painting at the Galerie Druet in Paris, which included work by Cumberland Market Group members, as well as by William Roberts and Edward Wadsworth.
