Eadfrith, Bishop of Lindisfarne (English scribe and illuminator, died 721)
|
Note: One of the artists responsible for the Lindisfarne Gospels. With the exception of some minor details Eadfrith was entirely responsible for the design and execution of the decoration as well as the text. His script is a stately insular majuscule typical of the Lindisfarne scriptorium. A colophon was added to the manuscript in the 10th century recording the patron as St. Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne (died 687), and the scribe as Eadfrith, who himself became Bishop of Lindisfarne in May 698. |
