Rossier, Pierre Joseph (Swiss photographer, 1829-1883/1898, in China)
|
Note: In Switzerland Rossier established photographic studios in Fribourg and Einsiedeln. In 1858 he was commissioned by the London photographic firm Negretti and Zambra to photograph views of China. Rossier's photographs were the first commercial images of Canton, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and other Asian places to be produced in England. He was also important in first teaching photography to Japanese students. In Asia, he was often mistakenly referred to as being English. He later returned to practice in Switzerland and Paris. |
