Isma'il Jalayir (Persian painter, active ca. 1860-1870)
|
Note: Jalayir was the son of Hajji Muhammad Zaman Khan Jalayir of Khurasan. He attended Dar al-Funun, an educational institution founded by Nasir al-Din Shah (reigned 1848-1496). Later in his career the young artist became a favorite of the monarch. He worked in different media and depicted scenes ranging from Christian stories to historical events. As the favorite artist in Nasir al-Din Shah's court he was commissioned to paint a portrait of the Qajar Shah (1862-1863). The most notable feature of his work is the apparent influence of European painting alongside a maintaining of the Iranian tradition. |
