Kinnaird, Charles Kinnaird, 8th Baron (British aristocrat, 1780-1826)
|
Note: He succeeded his father to the title on Oct.11, 1805. He built Rossie Priory in Perthshire where the collection was eventually kept. He was an active politician, but is best known for having built up the art collections. Some of the purchases attributed to his father may be his. Three sales of the collection were held between 1806 and 1813, the last supposedly caused by financial embarrassment. His bank accounts still survive at Ransom, Bouverie (now Barclays). Thee was also a Richard Kinnard, apparently a chemist, who is recorded in the Christie daybooks of Mar.3, 1815, as owning some pictures. Ld. Kinnaird bought some expensive pictures at the Rendlesham sale on Je 20, 1806. However, at least two of these belonged to Wm. Harris within a short time, and he either sold them to him or perhaps they were co-investors. Chr DB: Sept.18, 1816, Lord Kanard, Pall Mall, consigns? Murillo Virgin & Child. Can't find. The pictures sold by "Kinnaird" in 1807 have been put under the 8th Baron Kinnaird because the picture by Palamedesz appears to be the one bought by the 7th Baron in 1801, and the Giorgione/Tiziano of Venus and Cupid probably also match.
