Charles I, King of England (British king, 1600-1649)
|
Note: Second surviving son of James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark. He married Henrietta Maria, sister of the French king, Louis XIII. All his life Charles was shy and reserved, but respected for his excellent temper, courteous manners, and lack of vices. He was a great patron of painting and tapestry; he brought both Van Dyck and Peter Paul Rubens to England. |
