Škréta, Karel (Bohemian painter, ca.1610-1674)

Note: Son of a clerk in the royal court, his first teachers were probably among the court painters of Emperor Rudolf II. Emigrated with his mother in 1620 due to the expulsion of the Protestants from Prague. Arrived in Italy ca. 1630. In 1634 begins to be known as a portrait painter. In 1638 he returns to Prague to reclaim family property. He subsequently converted to Catholicism, which allowed him to work for religious institutions. His first paintings of religious subjects was a cycle depicting the Life of Saint Wenceslaus (ca. 1641-1643) for the monastery of the Discalced Augustinians. His early religious pictures show a blend of Rudolphine Mannerism and the new European Baroque. He is considered one of the greatest Bohemian painters of the 17th century, and was influential among his contemporaries. Comment on works: Religious; Portraits
