Record Type: Person
Shin Wi (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1769-1845)

Note: Shin Wi was a calligrapher, painter, and civil official during the late Joseon period. During a visit to China in 1812, Shin developed a friendship with Weng Fanggang (1733-1818) and received considerable influence from him. He learned how to paint ink bamboo from Gang Sehwang (1713-1791) and maintained a close relationship with Kim Jeonghui (1786-1856) based on their shared interest in textual-critical scholarship and literati painting. He styled his calligraphy after that of Dong Qichang (1555-1636) and Mi Fu (1051-1107), but was also influenced by Weng Fanggang. A master of ink bamboo painting, until the end of the Joseon period Shin Wi employed a literati style of ink bamboo painting avoiding similarities in shape and based on the concept of sketching thoughts. In landscape painting, he preferred Sothern painting school paintings following in the footsteps of Mi Fu and the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty. His style was passed down to his sons Shin Myongjun (1803-1842) and Shin Myeongyeon (1808-1886).
