Record Type: Person
Yi Insang (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1710-1760)

Note: Korean painter, calligrapher, and poet held a government position for eighteen years. After a dispute he retired to Sŏlsong, Umjuk District. He derived his painting style from Wen Zhengming (1470-1559) and Ming folk art of the early Qing dynasty. He was influential in promoting the "literati" style of the late Chŏson period. Yi Insang was a calligrapher and civil official in the late Joseon Dynasty. Although he was restricted by his status as a "seoeol", an illegitimate child born between a nobleman and a concubine, he produced a body of elegant literati painting based on his personal erudition. He excelled at landscapes and enjoyed painting literary subjects such as pine trees and rocks. Yi was skilled in all the styles of seal script calligraphy, and was particularly keen on the classical style (also known as "juseo" or "daejeon") that was used for rendering inscriptions on bronzeware. There was little understanding of seal script in Korea prior to the eighteenth century, but Yi became renowned for his mastery of this script.
