Sutton, Thomas (English photographer, scientist, and publisher, ca. 1818-1875)
|
Note: Sutton began to work as a photographer in Jersey, Channel Islands, in 1847. In the 1850s and 1860s, he developed improvements in lenses and cameras. Sutton travelled to Italy in 1851 and photographed in Florence. He then went to Rome in 1852, where he took lessons from the photographer comte Frédéric A. Flachéron (1813-1883). In 1854, Sutton submitted a series of negatives to Louis-Désiré Blanquart-Evrard (1802-1872), who published them under the title "Souvenirs de Jersey". In 1855, Sutton, in partnership with Blanquart-Evrard, established the "Establishment for Permanent Positive Printing" at Saint Brelade's Bay, Jersey. The partnership lasted until 1857. In 1856, Sutton began publishing "Photographic Notes" of which he was author and editor. In 1865, he moved to Redon, in Britanny, France, where he acted as a correspondent for the "British Journal of Photography" until shortly before his death in 1875. |
