Record Type: Person
Kim Hongdo (Korean painter and court artist, 1745-after 1806)

Note: Served as a county magistrate (hyŏn'gam), and retired from this position at 53 years of age. From the age of 50 he pursued the "true-view" painting style popularized by Chŏng Sŏn, which emphasized depictions of the native landscape of Korea. He was noted for his versatility and produced landscapes, portraits, religious art, depictions of plants and animals, and genre paintings. He was prolific, and his genre work is valuable for its depictions of 18th century Korean life at all class levels. Active in the late Joseon period, Kim Hongdo served as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo). He studied painting under Gang Sehwang (1713-1791) and socialized extensively with the literati he met through Gang. Kim also studied painting from painting manuals and works by master painters, going on to become a court painter and earn a reputation as a noted artist. Winning the trust of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800), he went on to lead major painting projects, including portraits of kings, sketches of trips to Geumgangsan (mountain) and Gangwon-do (province) together with Kim Eunghwan (1742-1789), and paintings of royal events. Kim Hongdo painted a wide range of fields and subjects. In particular, he created masterpieces of landscape and genre painting. He employed a realistic painting style for the time and contributed greatly to cultural development in the late Joseon period.
