Affecter (Attic vase painter, active ca. 540-520 BCE)
|
Note: An Attic black-figure vase painter whose name derives from the distinctive mannered appearance of his figures. Most of the ca. 140 vases attributed to him are well preserved due to their having been buried in Etruscan tombs. Most seem to have been produced for export. The Affecter is known for his unique emphasis on the decorative effects of silhouette figures is unique; this tendency contrasts with the general trend of the time towards emphasizing narrative in vase painting. His elegant compositions feature small-headed figures in ample, meticulously dotted drapery; the figures' long limbs create angular gestures and poses. The themes are highly repetitive but there are a few interesting mythological scenes. The Affecter seems to have specialized in decorating amphorae but chose unconventional types such as ovoid neck amphorae. He also favored old-fashioned features such as low picture friezes, figures on the necks, and double rays above the foot, but successfully and imaginatively combined them with inventions of his own. |
